Baja on the Fly Guide Policy

So there are no misunderstandings, here are some of our policies with explanations. If you want to discuss any of these policies before you come, or during your visit, please ask any questions at any time.

We try to match the fishing to the ability of our clients. We always look for ways to optimize your chances of success based on your level of skill. If catching fish matters less to you than being challenged, let us know. It might make a difference how we approach the day. We try to organize your trip to give you optimum chances at catching fish.  Sometimes roosterfish or dorado will not be available and our guide will suggest you go for tuna or jack crevalle; or the beach is quiet, so a panga trip will be more successful than your planned ATV trip.  Unless the weather is a factor, the final decision is yours, but we may offer you the option.

Our guides are not there to fish and they want to remain attentive to our clients’ needs. If you are a proficient fly-fisher and invite your guide fish with you – and we are confident that your enjoyment and your success will be enhanced by our participation – then we may consent to do so.

We try to educate our clients with the types of fishing available; the behavior of the fish; strategies for stalking and presentation; and anything else that might round out your knowledge.  If you have additional questions, or want additional instructions, please ask when the situation presents itself.

We're interested in hearing what you want to experience. We know that we're the guides, but we also know that most of our clients have goals that they'd like to see fulfilled, for example a particular species or on very light tippet.  Let us know what they are, and we'll tell you whether we can help you fulfill this objective.

Occasionally, one of our clients brings along someone who's never fly-fished in salt water or is a beginning angler. If you have a lot of experience, and your partner does not, or if your partner wants to use spin tackle, we'll have to juggle your interests. This might result in a less enjoyable day for both of you.

We can't control the weather or the behavior of the fish.  So, once you've elected to go out, then we're both committed to follow through with whatever agreement is in place.  Naturally, we feel bad when clients don't catch fish, or when a day is especially windy, but we do not give discounts or compensate guests for these natural occurrences.  We will always endeavor to do the best with the “hand” that Mother Nature deals us. Besides, it's probably true that we learn the most on days that are far from perfect. While we support and encourage the catch-and-release program, for a special taste treat, the local hotels will prepare some of your day's rewards for your party's sumptuous dining the same evening.

We've always embraced the philosophy, that fly-fishing is more than “catching fish.”  So much can happen out there that cannot be reduced to fish counts, and that "intangible something" is what we'll all remember years from now. Don't get us wrong: We endeavor to take you to locales where there are plenty of fish, and we will assist you in devising an effective approach to the fish that are there. But beyond that, catching fish depends on your skill, the weather, and at least a bit of sheer luck.
